What is Coaching?

You might think that coaching is a relatively new service provided by mental health and other professionals. In fact, coaching to provide relationship help for men has existed since the dawn of time. People have always had the natural tendency to seek out mentors for various reasons and situations. Think about it. When you have a spiritual concern, you seek out your minister, pastor, or spiritual leader. People often seek out mentors in their career field to help them grow and prosper in their profession. When we have a personal issue or crisis, we often seek out a trusted confidante, whom we often see as having more knowledge and experience in our area of concern, and ask them for their guidance and advice. Coaching is simply a new way of providing for our inherent need for guidance and growth.

When you seek out a coach or mentor, you look for someone who has knowledge and expertise in your area of concern. The coaches at The Men’s Resource Center have decades of combined education and experience to ensure you the best guidance and most successful path to reaching your goals. You can confide in your coach knowing he or she has the skills and knowledge necessary to help you make informed productive decisions. You can also rest easy knowing your confidentiality and privacy is ensured.

Coaching versus Therapy

What is the difference between coaching and traditional therapy? Although there are some similarities, they are two very different services. The chart below helps explain the fundamental differences between coaching and therapy:

Coaching Therapy
Deals with a client's strengths and desire to better his or her life. Deals with client’s identifiable issues or problems.
Deals mostly with the present and with designing a better future. Deals with past and trauma, seeks healing of past events.
Helps client learn new skills and tools to assist in designing a better future. Helps resolve old pain that keeps a client stuck in their current turmoil.
Co-creative partnership between coach and client. Relationship more closely resembles a doctor/patient dynamic.
Progress is fast-paced and forward moving. Progress can be slow and painful.

While therapy focuses on weaknesses and healing the past, coaching focuses on a person's strengths and on creating a bright future. At some point in your coaching journey, you and your coach might come upon old hurts or patterns that are holding you back from the progress you seek. These particular issues might be better addressed through traditional therapy. If this is the case, you and your coach will discuss together what the best course of action will be for you.
