November 22, 2009 - Intimate Relationships: The Mystery and Skill of Loving Relationships

Randy Flood presented to an Adult Education Class at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids on the topic Intimate Relationships. Randy discussed how intimate relationships won’t thrive on passion alone, nor will they grow by becoming an expert on your partner’s deficits. In order for intimacy and connection to grow, relationships need to be intentional, skill-based, and covenantal. Our intimate relationships are integral in cultivating joy and satisfaction OR pain and unhappiness in our lives. Randy Flood, psychotherapist, helped participants understand how intimate relationships function along the continuum of healthy to dysfunctional. He elucidated how the paradigm for healthy relationships has evolved over time requiring greater personal development to achieve deeper intimacy and connection. He explored the dimensions of dysfunction and health so that participants are more mindful in their quest to develop loving, evolved and joyful relationships with their intimate partners.

Randy had the opportunity to speak to approximately 800 students in 4 different "Choices for Living" Classes at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He helped the students understand how traditional male socialization, the construction of masculinity, can lead to problems in living, particularly in intimate relationships, health care, and emotional health. He helped the students understand how mid-life crisis, sexual addiction, domestic abuse, bullying in schools, and generalized violence in society can all be traced back to males buying into the the "tough guise" of masculine idealogy. Randy used visual aides as well as student exercises to help the students appreciate how developing one's full humanity enables men to live more joyfully and fully in the 21st century. The feedback from the class and professors involved were positive such that Randy continues to be asked to speak to this class every semester.

Charles Honey, religion editor, of the Grand Rapids Press interviewed Randy Flood of the Men's Resource Center at Fountain Hill regarding recent confessions by Ted Haggard. Charles and Randy discussed how his self-revelations related to Ted's complex sexuality may help other men who struggle with sexual addiction and other acting out problems. This is particularly true for men who suppress their sexuality related to sexual orientation. The suppression can create a dual self leading to compulsive and addictive sexual acting out, outside of an intimate relationship. Charles Honey authored the column "Don't Cast Stones at Haggard". A Vision to End Domestic Violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity for men to join together against domestic violence. Domestic Violence causes untold suffering for victims and their families. This year, as we see headlines of a Grand Rapids Police officer being killed while responding to a Domestic Violence call, we are struck also by the collateral damage caused by this pervasive societal problem.

We come together as men to understand the wide ranging impacts of domestic violence. We gather in order to consider specific actions we take to address this issue. We gather in order to support one another to make a difference, to embrace a community of men with a vision to end domestic violence.
